Woolf and the Chaucer Horse

Suzanne Bellamy

Painting

2011

Glasgow, Scotland

Woolf and the Chaucer Horse by Suzanne Bellamy is an artwork composed of photographs and texts that address the interplay between Virginia Woolf and Geoffrey Chaucer in literature. This work comprises a picture of a horse which relates to Woolf’s critical response to Chaucer and especially the question of voice and authority. Bellamy’s piece thereby serves as homage to, as well as a pictorial representation of Woolf’s critique in both its form and presentation – revealing how Woolf attempted to redefine the interaction between the modern and the historical literary voices.
