Being an adaptation of Michael Cunningham's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, The Hours is heavily inspired by Virginia Woolf's life and her novel Mrs. Dalloway. The film weaves together the lives of three women from different time periods, all connected through Woolf's influence: Virginia Woolf herself, who is writing Mrs. Dalloway in 1923; Laura Brown, a 1950s houswife reading the novel; and Clarissa Vaughan, a modern-day woman living out a parallel version of Woolf's story.
