Orlando: Exhibition

Tilda Swinton

Exhibition

2019

United States of America

Renowned actress Tilda Swinton enters the position of a curator with the piece titled Orlando which is based on the novel by Virginia Woolf published in 1928. Organized at Aperture Gallery in New York City, the show responds to Swinton’s changing understanding of Orlando, a character whom she embodies in the 1992 film version, a man who lives through the centuries taking on both male and female form. By viewing it through Swinton’s curatorial prism, Orlando is revealed to be a much more profound work about both gender and race, as well as transformation. With pieces by Elle Pérez, Collier Schorr, and Paul Mpagi Sepuya, the show engages Queer, Transgender, and Race, pushing and provoking as an extension of the novel.
