Head of Virginia Woolf
Stephen Tomlin
Statue
1931
United Kingdom
In 1931, after years of reluctance, Virginia Woolf sat for sculptor Stephen Tomlin. Following six uncomfortable sittings, she abandoned the project, describing it as “torture.” Created when Woolf was 49, this rare piece became even more valuable after the original clay version was lost. Inherited by Tomlin’s wife, Julia Strachey, it later passed to writer David Garnett, marking one of the few surviving works by Tomlin.
