Água Fresca: Uma Comédia de Virginia Woolf
Sol Faganello
Theatre
2025
São Paulo, Brazil
This is the first Brazilian staging of Virginia Woolf's only theatrical work Freshwater: A Comedy under the title Água Fresca: Uma Comédia de Virginia Woolf. Under Victor Santiago's translation and adaptation of the play, this production provides a new perspective on Woolf's satirical comedy for a contemporary Brazilian audience. Initially written as a lighthearted farce satirizing Victorian upper-class society, the play evolves in this translation into an allegorical critique of cultural standards alongside intellectual biases through the lens of Água Fresca. Director Sol Faganello uses physical comedy along with clowning elements in her staging to showcase both the social commentary and humorous aspects of the play while illustrating the fluidity of thought and the absurdity of rigid social structures. This production combines efforts to reveal Woolf's playful side by making her comedic genius understandable for contemporary audiences.
